Machining steel is the most widely used type of metalworking. Whether drilling or grinding, turning or milling, steel is generally suitable for any cutting technique. Steels with low carbon content tend to stick to the cutting edge. They form long strip chips that can get caught in the machine. The result: low cutting forces with poor surfaces of the turned and milled parts. With medium carbon content, sticking does not play a role.
The cutting forces increase, the surfaces of the turned parts and milled parts made of steel improve and the chips become shorter. On the other hand, tool wear is increasing. Steels with high carbon content lead to high forces and temperatures as well as high wear. Surface quality and chip breaking are good. Mild steels are easy to machine. Quenched and tempered or hardened steels cause high wear and require expensive tools made of cutting ceramics or boron nitride.
Free-cutting steel is optimized for the automated manufacturing processes of machining technology and is therefore ideal for drilling and turning and milling operations. Because of its good machinability, free-cutting steel is ideally suited for automatic lathes, milling machines and large series. In order to meet the highest demands for precision and surface quality, a well thought-out production structure is required. In recent years, we have constantly optimized our processes. We start with lot sizes as small as 500 pieces. This benefits from the higher flexibility and shorter set-up times of our systems.
We are continuously investing in modern peripherals, such as an automatic tool store, which takes care of tool supply by means of barcodes. We also have a PPS system including CAQ, BDE/MDE and DNC, which supplies all machines with the required programs.
The machines are - next to our employees - the most important element of our production. Only if they are efficient as well as highly available and still bring their precision after years, they have a place in our production. We work in three shifts, so there is no time for machine downtime.
